Communications Officer
(National Staff Position)

Specific duties, responsibilities and accountability:


  • Under direction of communications delegate, execute a beneficiary communications, media and public relations plan to improve programmes, support global resource mobilization efforts and enhance the visibility of PMI and the IFRC.
  • Establish and maintain communication and relation with affected community, local NGOs and government for the purpose of exchanging information of updated issues vice versa (Red Cross, community, and relevant stakeholders) .
  • In close consultation with PMI and the operation, identify how vulnerable populations access information, and ensure the steady flow of relief and recovery information via those means.
  • Work with IFRC and PMI teams to help raise community and public awareness on implementing programmes by producing and using wide range of publications: posters, leaflet, booklet, and book.
  • Support the of various products related to communications priorities: web stories, case studies, photos, video, articles for the RC/RC magazine.
  • Provide effective and sustained communications support to the operational major programmes and promote these programmes with national societies and other partners, as well as media.
  • Develop reactive and proactive relationships with national, regional and international media, in line with communications and advocacy goals of the Red Cross.
  • Write media releases and other media-related materials to be signed off and issued by communications delegate and the AP Zone Communications Team and participate in the development of key messages, statements, opinion piece, brochures/publicati ons as well as templates to be used at a zone, regional or national level.
  • Support capacity and skills building of communicators in the advocacy and promotion of humanitarian values work of PMI.
  • Actively contact (in coordination with the AP Zone Communications Team) international media to arrange interviews for Red Cross/Red Crescent spokespeople in the field.
  • Support in raising awareness and fundraising initiatives in areas which are identified as key priorities, including the operational and global alliances.
  • Liaise with the programme and operations managers and delegates to gather relevant and accurate information/ data related to emergency.
  • Ensure effective working relationships with National Society counterparts and leadership.

Qualification & Experience:
  • University degree in communications or journalism
  • Experience of working in emergency operation preferred
  • Minimum 3 years experience of working on communications / journalism related tasks
  • Work experience with other international organizations, large NGOs and/or governmental development agencies preferred.
  • Ability to work in a diverse cultural context.
  • Strong communications skills and robust knowledge of information sharing tools, and the ability to implement them.
  • Highly organized, with ability to create unified team approach.
  • Strong skills in written and oral English
  • In good mental and physical health
  • Experience working in the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement preferred
