EMPLOYMENT: IFPRI Research Fellow, Democratic Republic of Congo Strategy Support Program (Deadline: August 1, 2011)

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow and Leader of its country strategy support program in Democratic Republic Congo (DRC) for a two year, fixed-term, exempt renewable appointment.  The position will be based in Kinshasa, DRC and reports to the Director of the Development Strategy and Governance Division.
The DRC country strategy support program aims to enhance Congolese capacity for evidence-based policymaking in the areas of agriculture and rural development and poverty reduction.  It supports research and capacity strengthening for the implementation of DRC's national and provincial development strategies. It addresses policy effectiveness and coherence within the agricultural sector as well as between the agricultural sector and other sectors key to economic growth and poverty reduction in that country.  Key research and capacity strengthening activities will be carried out with a broad array of agricultural sector stakeholders, including DRC'S Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development, other concerned provincial government departments, key Congolese research institutes and universities, and selected private sector and nongovernmental organizations.

The research group BioDIVA at the Institute of Environmental Planning seeks to appoint a Post-doctoral researcher for the next possible date until January 2014.
BioDIVA is funded by the BMBF within the framework of social-ecological research and research for sustainability (SÖF/ FONA). The research group examines and develops methods for the generation of transformation knowledge to achieve and maintain gender-equitable and sustainable use of biodiversity for rice-farming-systems in Kerala, India.  A strong emphasis is placed on the development and application of inter- and transdisciplinary approaches.
The motivated scientist will analyse complex social-ecological systems, study changes in land use patterns and the effects on agrobiodiversity. The position is open to develop methodological approaches (i.e. models, scenarios etc.) to operationalise and synthesise in a participatory manner the economic, ecologic and social dimensions of sustainable development.

CIFOR is looking for a CIFOR Representative for its Eastern and Southern Africa Region

The CIFOR Representative in Eastern and Southern Africa will facilitate the efficient and effective implementation of CIFOR's global programme at the regional level. The Representative will work closely with the research division,  our technical and administrative support divisions and their counterparts at other CGIAR centres and partner organisations to ensure integration and coordination of all collaborative activities in the region.

The Representative will take the lead in developing and maintaining the Center's relationships with donors, partners and other stakeholders in the region. The Representative will help mobilise financial resources from Africa-specific funding sources, in coordination with staff based at headquarters and elsewhere in Africa.

Principal accountabilities

  • Strategic issues
  • Coordinate and oversee implementation of our strategy in ESA
  • Provide strategic advice to other directors and research leaders on opportunities and risks specific to the region
  • Support directors and research leaders to develop compelling research proposals, identify the human and financial resources needed to deliver the identified research outcomes and establish the partnerships needed to deliver ultimate impacts

Representation

  • Maintain and further develop high-level relationships with a diversity of partners and stakeholders, including national governments, multilateral and regional organisations, donor agencies, nongovernmental organisations, research institutes and other partners and stakeholders in the region
  • Provide support to the coordination and collaboration with other CGIAR centres working in Africa, and in particular, with the World Agroforestry Centre under the rubric of the CGIAR Research Program  on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry
  • In collaboration with the Information Services Group, ensure that CIFOR communications are effectively conveyed to target audiences in the region

The Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) is located in the School of Government within the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, and is an internationally recognized centre of excellence. Programme. 
Two of CIFOR’s six strategic research domains are: Enhancing the role of forests in climate mitigation and Enhancing the role of forests in adaptation to climate change. The Forests and Governance Programme contributes to each of these strategic research domains. The Research Officer will be part of a governance/climate team and will support the scientists in the governance programme. He/she will perform a variety of tasks, as needed and directed.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Senior Scientists

Headquartered in Bogor, Indonesia with offices in Africa and South America, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) is a leading international forestry research organization established in response to global concerns about the social, environmental, and economic consequences of forest loss and degradation. CIFOR is dedicated to developing policies and technologies for sustainable use and management of forest products and services, and for enhancing the well being of people in developing countries who rely on tropical forests. CIFOR works in over 30 countries worldwide and has links with researchers in 50 international, regional and national organizations. CIFOR is a member of the CGIAR (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research).

CIFOR is looking for creative and visionary candidates to join its Research Team as Senior Scientists. The Scientists, who will work closely with other CIFOR research programmes, will help facilitate and identify strategic opportunities in the fields of forests and livelihoods, and/or environmental services. The Scientists will undertake research, develop and maintain functional partnerships, support capacity-building initiatives, and assist in developing and maintaining donor relations. They will be supportive of staff development, and will encourage continuous improvement and learning. Each position reports to the Director of respective Programme.

(a) Senior Scientists – Climate Change (2 positions). Each Scientist will be attached to one of CIFOR’s Research Programme: Forests and Governance Programme and Forests and Livelihoods Programme. The Scientists will contribute to CIFOR’s Climate Change and Forests Initiative

(b) Senior Scientist – Forests and Livelihoods (1 position). The Scientists will be attached to the Forests and Livelihoods Programme. The research focus could be on any of the topics covered in the program (conservation and development outcomes; forests and human well being; forest industry and local livelihoods).

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in an appropriate discipline, experienced in collaborative research. Have global track record as researcher with knowledge of forest, livelihoods and/or climate change issues. The Scientist will have excellent team leadership, facilitation and organizational skills. The candidate has excellent interpersonal and communication skills, experienced in working with and/or has led multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary research teams. She or he will have a strong publications record, proven fund-raising record and substantial proposal-writing experience. Fluency in English is required; proficiency in other international languages is desirable.

Terms of Employment:

  • CIFOR offers an internationally competitive salary and expatriated benefits package including housing, transportation, home leave, education support and comprehensive healthcare.
  • The positions are based in Bogor, Indonesia and extensive international travel is required.
