VACANCY: Interdisciplinary Scientist at ICRAF-CATIE

ICRAF and CATIE have created a new position for an ICRAF scientist to be based at CATIE to forge closer links amongst the two institutions through the development of joint agroforestry research. The position involves the following overall remit and specific tasks.

The overall remit is to lead the development and implementation of a coherent joint agroforestry research programme that realises opportunities from the complementarity of ICRAF and CATIE as institutions. ICRAF seeks  Senior Natural Resources Management Scientist. This position is on International terms and will be for an initial period of three (3) years, renewable subject to nine (9) months’ probation period, assessment of performance, continued relevance of the position and availability of resources.

Job opportunity: Scientist, Forests and Climate Change at CIFOR

CIFOR is looking for a scientist to join its Research Team as part of the Environmental Services and Sustainable Use of Forests Program. The scientist will work closely with colleagues in other programs, will help facilitate and identify strategic opportunities, and will be responsible for research and project management, in close consultation with the CIFOR Regional Coordinator for Latin America and under the overall guidance of the respective Programme Director.

The scientist is expected to contribute to forests and climate change research activities in Latin America, including:

• Undertake relevant research in the context of both mitigation and adaptation science as it relates to forest management and forest-based environmental services
• Coordinate activities of a CIFOR coordinated project funded by the Spanish Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Tecnología Agraria y Alimentaria on mitigation and adaptation of forests to climate change (Proyecto MIA: Mitigación y Adaptación al Cambio Climático)
• Coordinate the Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation focus of the CGIAR Amazon Ecoregional Program for the Amazon Initiative.
• Develop new research initiatives in climate change mitigation and adaptation and participate in fund raising.

VACANCY: Director of PLAAS / Chair of Development Management

The Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) is located in the School of Government within the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, and is an internationally recognized centre of excellence. The Director occupies a Chair in Development Management within the School of Government.

Applications are invited for the post of Director/Chair, beginning on 1st January 2010. The Director/Chair will provide overall strategic management of PLAAS, supervise Senior Researchers and senior administrators, raise funds for core functions, work closely with finance staff in managing the Institute’s finances, report to donors and maintain good relations with them, ensure a high public profile for PLAAS, and represent PLAAS on university and non-academic bodies. In addition, the Director/Chair will actively pursue his/her own research and publications agenda, lead PLAAS’ policy engagement activities, teach on the post-graduate teaching programme, and supervise MPhil and Doctoral students. The incumbent will provide strong intellectual leadership for the Institute, and work closely with a recently funded DST/NRF Research Chair in Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies.
